Whether it’s in an upper-class family in 19th century England, such as in Pride & Prejudice, or a poor Jewish family in Bolshevik Russia, such as in Fiddler on the Roof, all parents share the same values: to see their children marry off well. This Universally appealing subject, which is one of the central themes of Fiddler on the Roof, along with the endearing characters and the unforgettable music is what makes this musical a world-wide success and it’s coming to Brooklyn College this Spring! The iconic musical Fiddler on the Roof was written in 1964 by Joseph Stein, with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It tells the story of the residents of a small Russian village on the eve of the Bolshevik revolution, who attempt to maintain family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. Featuring heartwarming songs like “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” and “If I Were a Rich Man,” this landmark Broadway musical cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion.
Fiddler was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It was the first Broadway musical to surpass 3,000 performances and held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years (at 3,242 performances) until Grease surpassed its run. It spawned four Broadway revivals and a successful 1971 film adaptation, and it remains Broadway’s fifteenth longest-running show in history.
