This post is sponsored by Niko and The Sword of Light, debuting on Prime Video on July 21. As always, all opinions are my own.
Hold on to your tiaras, and get ready for a brand new sword-sational Amazon Original Kids series, Niko and the Sword of Light, which debuts on Prime Video, Friday, July 21! This new Emmy-winning fantasy adventure series takes young viewers to a magical land where a lone champion battles the darkness with his magic sword and the guidance of a determined princess. Niko and the Sword of Light follows Niko as he journeys to the Cursed Volcano to free his people and return the world to the light. Make Your Own Play Sword + Inspired by Niko and the Sword of Light
Niko is 10 and the last thing that Princess Lyra expected to save her people. He’s the last of his kind in a strange, fantastical world, as he embarks on an epic quest to defeat the darkness and bring the light back to his land. Armed with his magic Sword of Light, the brave Niko journeys to the Cursed Volcano, making new friends and powerful foes along the way, all while uncovering secrets about his mysterious past. His sidekick is Mandok, who is a pretty funny creature. I’m not really sure what he is exactly, but he’s very comical. Princess Lyra of Carondolet is a tougher nut to crack. She’s been 14 years old.. for over 700 years.
In the first episode, Mandok (whatever he is) accidentally releases Niko from a magical chrysalis. Instead of a fully-grown Champion of Carondolet, ghostly princess Lyra finds a ten year old boy. He has no clue who is he and what powers he has, but he has to trust Lyra, who must lead Niko across the Bridge of Doom, but when the horrible Xerxes returns and attacks, Lyra has no choice but to put her faith in untested Niko.
This show is probably best for kids over 8 or 9 – as it was a little scary. My almost 7 year old, 9 1/2 year old and almost 12 year olds were all intrigued and we were literally jumping out of our seats. We really liked the show!
In honor of this new show, I’m going to show you how to make your own sword of light.
You’ll need:
A wrapping paper tube
Duct tape (I used one roll of silver glitter and one roll of charcoal glitter duct tape)
Thinner back electrical tape
Paper towel roll
Watch the video for instructions on how to make this — it’s super easy and fun.
Niko and the Sword of Light features the voice talent of Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Andre Robinson (Doc McStuffins), Steve Blum (Star Wars: Rebels), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Penguins of Madagascar), Jim Cummings (Shrek), and Kari Wahlgren (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness). Based on the motion graphic comic by Imaginism Studios, Inc., the studio behind character and concept designs for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Men in Black 3, and Studio NX (The Carrot and Rabbit Show, Tree Fu Tom), Niko and the Sword of Light is animated by Titmouse (Motorcity, Metalocalpyse) and executive produced by Rob Hoegee (Generator Rex, Teen Titans), who also serves as showrunner.

Omg! I remember making these when i was like 5. We used the loose paper we had and taped everything together.
Sara says
Haha! This is a pretty cool tutorial. I used to do the same thing when I was young. Instead of paper rolls, we used cardboard from boxes and cut it into a sword shape.
The Mama Maven says
Yours is an excellent idea!

Omg how fun!!!! I bet my daughter would love to make her own sword! Definitely putting this on our to-do list

This will be a big hit at our house, with four boys and one girl someone is always cooking up a massive battle that they need more swords for! great idea!

I’ve never heard of this! My girls are probably a little too young (especially since you mentioned it’s a little scary), but will definitely keep in on the radar for down the road.
Heather says
My two daughters would have so much fun with this craft! They have a big age gap but both still love imaginary playtime together. At two and eight, I’m sure they would love this project.
Heather says
I bet my kids would love this! Especially if they can make and then use a sword 🙂 I will have to look for this!

I would be careful to give such things to kids. What if they accidentally hurt themselves. I have a weak heart.
The Mama Maven says
It’s a cardboard tube, I think they would be okay.
Karen Morse says
This is such a fun craft. I think it’s something that the kids will appreciate. This is my first time hearing about the Sword of Light! It sounds like a very entertaining and enjoyable show!
Amber Nelson says
Oh for fun! My kids would love this project. I think this would be great fun!
Pam says
My boys are all about swords and “battling”! They would love this and quite honestly, your sword might hold up better than some we’ve bought at the store! We’ll have to check out Niko… we love Amazon Originals (we love TumbleLeaf!) and it sounds like a series the kids would love.
Cassie says
How clever! I didn’t know it was this simple to make a play sword and really much better than buying one because they still hurt when you get hit with one (thanks to my nephew for teaching me that haha)
La Shell says
How cool! Haha! My nieces and nephews would love this!
Beth Davidson says
I’ve never heard of this show, but I’m sure my son will flick through it (seriously just flick through it, he won’t watch anything yet) at some point. We probably need a sword though, he needs a new way to antagonize the dogs. 🙂
Kansas Bonanno says
This is adorable! I’ll have to show my kids this, they love new shows and i’m sure this will become their favorite. I’ll need to get them the stuff to make them their own sword.
Jessica Joachim says
This looks cute! I have never heard of it but should look into it bc it seems adorable. The sword came out so cute as well.
Melissa Chapman says
I will have to have some of my nephews watch this one because my son is 12 and might be too old. That sword looks like a great idea and seems very safe for kids to use.

My youngest would love Niko and the Sword of Light AND making his own play sword. What a fun idea. I will have to make him one.
