Kids Theater Review: Dog Man The Musical – A Hysterical Musical Kids will Love!

07/08/2019 by Maytal

If your kids are fans of Captain Underpants, there’s a good chance they also love Dog Man, the best-selling series by Dav Pilkey. My boys, ages six and ten, are obsessed with Dog Man and I love watching them plow through the book series with enthusiasm. They love the series so much they even discuss it with each other! I was very excited to take them to see Dog Man the Musical this past weekend. Not having read the books myself, I had to rely on my boys to give me the details and it turns out the show is essentially like watching the books come to life. Kids Theater Review: Dog Man The Musical – A Hysterical Musical Kids will Love!

Dog Man, for those who aren’t familiar, is a crime-fighting half-dog, half man. His “creators” – two kids in the fifth grade – come up with storylines and the show is about them and Dog Man’s adventures. The show begins with the opening number called, yup – The Opening Number. This is a hysterical parody of musicals, very cleverly written, and sets the tone for the show: it’s going to be a very funny show. And it is. There are tons of jokes geared for kids, along with jokes that only adults would understand.

The cast of six had terrific chemistry and seemed to be having a blast throughout the show. The adaptation – book and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila and music by Brad Alexander – seemed to follow the stories in the series very closely. My older son said that “everything was the same, except that there was music”. The music itself is fun and catchy.

Since I wasn’t familiar with the books, I was surprised to see how imaginative the stories were. It’s no surprise Dog Man is a smash hit. I think translating it into a musical only adds another dimension and gives the series more depth, so if your kids haven’t yet read Dog Man, they’ll still love the show on its own, simply because it’s pure entertainment and has a compelling storyline.

The show is recommended for kids ages 5-11. It runs one hour and fifteen minutes and has a ten-minute intermission.
