Is Your Smoke Alarm Working? Check Your Batteries When You Change Your Clocks!

11/03/2011 by The Mama Maven

When was the last time you checked the batteries in your smoke alarm? According to the FDNY, you should replace the batteries twice a year. Daylight Savings Time is a great way to remember this – which is this Sunday, November 6th. So when you change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery!

Did you know that a smoke alarm is the most valuable lifesaving device you can have? It will nearly cut in half your chances of dying in a fire. While most of us (hopefully all) have smoke alarms — more than 33% of houses have SMOKE ALARMS THAT DON’T WORK!

Last week I attended a great event with the fabulous Moms (Melissa, Denise and Raina) of Moms And The City, at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, sponsored by Energizer (yes, the bunny was there), where the message was “Change your clocks, change your batteries!” Kids got to meet the Energizer Bunny (of course) and fireman Anthony, who educated us about Fire Safety.

So, do us a favor, check your batteries now (or make sure you have a working smoke detector). To I practice what I preach, I checked our smoke detector today to make sure it still worked (it did), plus I bought another one at Target to in my children’s rooms.
