Around this time of the year, most google searches will include the term “latke”. Wondering what the latke is? The latke is a traditional Jewish dish that is mostly associated with the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which is the Festival of Lights. The word “latke” itself is Yiddish, derived from the East Slavic word “oladka,” meaning pancake. The history of the Jewish latke is deeply rooted in religious and cultural traditions. Over the years, the latke has become a symbol of Hanukkah celebrations, and it is a popular dish served during this festival. Families often gather to make and enjoy latkes together, and they are commonly served with applesauce or sour cream. Here are tasty 30 latke recipes for Hanukkah or anytime!

The story of the latke is often connected to the miracle of Hanukkah, which commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century BCE. According to the Talmud, when the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple and wanted to light the menorah, they found only a small amount of olive oil that should have lasted for only one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, allowing enough time to produce more oil. To celebrate this miracle, it is customary to eat foods fried in oil during Hanukkah, and the latke is a delicious manifestation of this tradition.

Classic Latkes

The classic latke is made from grated potatoes, onions, eggs, and flour, seasoned with salt and pepper, and then fried until crispy. In different Jewish communities, there are variations of the latke recipe. For example, some use sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes, and various spices can be added to enhance the flavor. But if you are looking for quick and simple – this is the recipe for you!
