This One’s for the Girls – A Musical Walk Through History

10/18/2018 by Maytal

Whether they’re on-Broadway, Off-Broadway, in Times Square or in Union Square, musicals have a way of touching people through their music. I recently discovered a really fun musical that also gives us a crash course in history and feminism; the off-Broadway musical, This One’s for the Girls, is chock-full of incredible songs that you can sing along to and showcases women in the history of America for the past 100+ years. I recently saw it and thought it’s perfect for a girls’ get-together. This One’s for the Girls – A Musical Walk Through History

The show, written by Dorothy Marcic, doesn’t really have a plot but instead walks us through famous women in history from the 1900’s until today and shows through small skits and mega-hit songs how women have changed through the generations. The four performers, all women, discuss history from a woman’s point of view and include tidbits and stories about groundbreaking women such as Rosa Parks. In the background on stage, there’s a slideshow of famous women in history (and also of some infamous men) to accompany the performance. The show, peppered with humor, is well-done and the songs are really fun and fit the eras and the stories that are told. The subject of woman empowerment runs as a theme throughout the performance.

In the performance that I saw, Aneesa Folds stood out as the strongest singer, with a stellar voice that showcased her vast range. Every single scene she was in was a knockout (luckily she was in almost every scene). As expected, she was easily able to belt out songs like “Respect” and “I Will Survive” but then she threw us a curveball in the form of “As Long as He Needs Me” and the entire audience was captivated by her incredible performance.

The rest of the cast showed their versatility and together the four women put on an amazing homage to women everywhere. This One’s for the Girls runs 90 minutes and is recommended for kids ages 12 and up. It’s a terrific way to expose your middle-schooler to women empowerment and a little history to boot!

This One’s for the Girls is currently playing at St. Luke’s Theatre, 308 W46th St, btwn 8th and 9th Aves, NYC. Performances are Sat & Wed at 2pm. To purchase tickets call (800) 447-7400 or click here.
