Squooshi Reusable Pouches: A Wonderful, Green Idea for Babies and Toddlers

12/26/2012 by The Mama Maven

My youngest child is 28 months old. He’s not a great eater; but will eat almost anything from a pouch. Consequently, I’m still buying baby food in pouches, a year after he probably should have stopped. And it’s getting expensive, even with coupons. I was wondering if I could find some reusable pouches. And then I saw Squooshi’s Reusable Pouches and knew this was what I had been looking for.

Now, you may not want to make all your child’s food from scratch, but you can easily buy bigger containers of foods like applesauce and portion it out easily in Squooshi’s pouches. You could even send a pouch of applesauce to school in an older child’s lunchbox. My 5 and 7 year olds still enjoys pouch applesauce. You just have to make sure they come home (ie. write RETURN and your child’s name).

I also love this — Squooshi resealable food pouches use less fuel in shipping than do pre-packaged food-filled pouches, and they are reusable, so they save energy and reduce waste, air pollution, and global warming. But remember the pouches you make aren’t going to be shelf stable, like pre-packaged yogurt packages, so you need to keep them cold if you make purees with anything perishable.
This is how you fill them:

Then open your Squooshi pouch on the bottom (there’s a zipper enclosure), then screw the included green top on (so your purees won’t come out when you fill it) and spoon your puree of choice in. I chose the panda.

Seal the pouch.

And serve.

My little one was immediately attracted to the panda printed on the package and grabbed the applesauce out of my hands immediately. Now, I can make some of the purees he likes at home (I make a thicker version a yogurt smoothie) and he’ll drink them. I still buy pre-filled pouches, but now I buy less of them. Which has definitely saved me money!
