7 Fun Snow Day Activities for Kids

01/09/2017 by The Mama Maven

Winter has really made itself known, as of this weekend. Plans went out the window and usual activities were canceled. Keeping sanity was important. Luckily we had more than enough meals, snacks, and plenty of activities for our kids to do. Snow days can totally be smile-worthy! Plus, read on how your kids can make a stop-motion movie featuring Goldfish crackers and have a chance to win $5000!

7 Fun Snow Day Activities for Kids to Keep Boredom at Bay

1. Play outside. Bundle up really well, with snow pants, jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves. Remember to come in when you see your kids getting too cold. Fresh air is great for kids, but watch for lips turning blue. We hit our local park, Forest Park, and have a ball.

It was so cold that I actually drove to the park.

2. Play Games! We love playing board games with our kids. It’s great fun (plus kids learn how to follow directions without realizing it).

3. Read! Curl up with a good book on the couch. Blanket and snacks optional, of course. My little guy is currently into anything dinosaurs, comic book related or sea animals.

4. Break out the art supplies. Goldfish crackers go well with sisters and drawings of dinosaurs.

5. Cook! We love to make blueberry pancakes, soups, brownies, grilled cheese with our kids. For sanity’s sake, try to cook with one kid at a time (when I have all three in the kitchen, things go south fast). We love to add Goldfish crackers to our meals and snacks. And if you’re wondering, they taste delicious added to my chicken soup!

Goldfish crackers are always baked with real cheese. There are no artificial flavors or preservatives. Colors are sourced from plants, such annatto extracted from the reddish seeds of the Achiote Tree. Goldfish crackers are baked with whole grain. It’s a snack that you can feel good about serving to your kids. But they might also grab the bag of Goldfish crackers baked with whole grain from you and try to run off with them… Which was definitely a smile-worthy moment.

6. Craft! If you’re anything like my family, there are always beads, string, paper, scissors..etc. We love doing crafts.

7. Make a stop-motion movie. We love our tech here and when we learned about the Goldfish Tales Animation Stop-motion Video Contest, we decided to try making our own. My 11-year-old son designed the “set” and I was in charge of working the iPhone. We had discussed this for days before — and my kids got so excited. When it came down to make our movie, my daughter was cooking dinner with my husband and my little guy was playing in the other room. So B and I discussed themes and what we could do. We did a takeoff on the Olympic Games with the “Goldfish Games”. We had so much fun with this. We did a run-through and then decided to do it again. Thanks to a friend’s recommendation, we used the Stop Motion Studio App, which made it super easy. In fact, it was so easy that I may have found my new obsession. My son has made videos before, but this was a new one for him too. We used Goldfish baked with whole grain, but Goldfish colors would have worked really well with this also.

See the movie we made.

How cool is this — your kids can make your own movie featuring Goldfish crackers and have the chance to win $5000!

There are several categories to win in.

I was actually afraid to make a stop-motion video, but the instructions and video tutorials made it so simple.

Great tips! We’ve been bringing out the games since it got could, too. There’s nothing quite like munching on some gold fish while cozying up indoors. Seriously, this is that one snack that I always find myself stealing from my son haha
