When Your Daughter Needs Her First Bra: 6 Tips From a Bra Expert

01/03/2018 by The Mama Maven

This is a sponsored conversation from Hanes and there are affiliate links in this post. All opinions are my own.

Recently I noticed something important. My daughter, who just turned 10 on December 31, started.. ahem.. developing a couple of months ago. And I wasn’t ready for it. I feel like it just seems so much earlier than I developed. However, as a mom, I wanted to make her transition to wearing a bra pretty seamless (totally a pun) and easy. I broached the conversation with my daughter while we were taking a road trip together. We talked about that her body is changing and developing and it’s perfectly normal to wear a bra. While she’s still the early stages, I explained that she needed to wear some support every day under her shirts. Since we’ve been Hanes fans for a long time and use their underwear, socks, and undershirts for all my children (and for us also), it made sense to turn to Hanes for her first bra. When your daughter needs her first bra | The Mama Maven Blog

Hanes sent us an assortment of bras. I had her try a few of the styles on to see what worked for her and the clear choice was Hanes Girls’ Seamless Pullover Bra. It was absolutely perfect for her. It gave more support than the camis and tank tops she was wearing and gave her just the right support (if you know what I mean!). It was the light protection under her clothes that she needed and perfect choice for my daughter’s first bra. She was able to put it right under her shirts and dresses, instead of her usual undershirts and be on her merry way.

Plus, at around $11 for a 2 pack, they fit in our budget. My daughter liked that they looked like her camis (just shorter and more fitted) and were easy to put on. They washed well and she felt like they were part of her wardrobe. As the only girl in the house, I wanted to make sure she adjusted well and didn’t leave home without some support on her body!

We also love Hanes Girls’ Seamless Molded Cup Wirefree Bra, which also comes in a 2-Pack. My daughter loved this wirefree bra! I removed the foam cups pretty easily and will put them back as needed.

Features:

  • Soft, seamless fabrication for all day comfort.
  • Removable foam cups for modesty and shaping.
  • Adjustable straps ensures the right fit.
  • Available in a convenient 2-Pack.

Hanes also sent us their Molded Wirefree Bra 2-Pack.  While my daughter definitely wasn’t ready for these bras yet, I am glad that we have a couple for when she is ready (I’m thinking in a year or so she will be ready). They were wire-free, but had more support than the pullover bras that my daughter has been wearing.

Tips for Finding A Bra for Your Daughter – from Hanes Bra Expert Melissa Berry

  • Girls develop at different rates – some later, some more quickly. So be prepared to have the discussion. It’s an important time for body awareness and self-confidence.
  • Remember that your girl is still growing, so consider a bra with a flexible fit, adjustable straps and removable foam inserts. Hanes bras are designed with growing girls in mind.
  • In terms of styles, a seamless pullover or bralette can be a great starter bra. Next, look for a seamless style with removable pads for added modesty. For girls on the go, a racerback style can provide a sporty look and keep straps from slipping off her shoulders. For older girls, molded cups provide smooth shaping and support.
  • Know what type of bra your daughter wants before you go shopping. This helps you focus your options and ease the decision-making process, in what can be an emotional time (for you and your daughter!).
  • Once at the store, consider the fit: Can she jump up and down without the bottom band riding up or the straps falling down? Can she wear her backpack comfortably? Is she comfortable with the thinness or thickness of the strap?
  • Look for easy sizing guidelines on the package – knowing your daughter’s clothing size and/or weight will help you to find the right size for her.

Not a parent yet but always wanted a girl…don’t know that I’d want to have the bra discussion though.

Where was this info when I needed it! I never thought to try Hane’s for my daughter. She’s 12 now and very busty. I’ll check them out next time we shop for bras.

I don’t have kids yet but I can imagine what a difficult time it would be to find a first bra. Good job, Mama finding one she’s likes! It looks super comfortable too!
