Turbo Movie Review: Suitable for Toddlers?

07/16/2013 by The Mama Maven

By Nancy Johnson Horn, Editor

We saw a screening of Turbo this weekend and if your kids like racing (and you like the underdog), then you’ll all enjoy Turbo! This was also the first movie I took my toddler son, Skylar to.. Find out how he did at the end of this post.

The film features Theo/Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), a garden snail with big dreams to race in the Indy 500. His brother, Chet (voiced by Paul Giamatti) is the voice of reason, that isn’t always listened to. After an encounter with nitrous oxide, Theo becomes fast. He and Chet end up meeting some very interesting characters along the way. Will they be able to follow Theo’s dream?

Will kids like it?

Yes! Adults will laugh too. Everyone roots for Theo and the animation is stunning (and there is great action – yes, even in a movie about a snail).

How will Toddlers and Little Kids Do With this Movie:

It’s not scary, but it is a little loud. We saw it in 3D and my toddler ended up ripping off the glasses 40 minutes into the movie. Being almost 3 years old, this was actually his first movie theater experience. He did very well, but I made sure my oldest child and I had him between us and I let him stand on the floor and walk between our seats. He loved the popcorn (just be careful, it is a choking hazard) and I made sure I had shelf stable chocolate milk and other snacks to entice him). I was prepared to take him out if he became too crazy (because toddlers have a habit of doing that), but luckily I didn’t have to do that.

Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox, the movie also stars  Michael Peña, Snoop Dogg, Maya Rudolph, Michelle Rodriguez and Samuel L. Jackson.

Thank you to DreamWorks Animation for supplying us to tickets for a screening. As always, all opinions are my own.
