NYC Show Review: “Timmy the Great” – Don’t Miss this Hidden Gem!

08/21/2013 by Maytal

by Senior Reviewer Maytal Wichman

This past weekend I took my daughter to see an extraordinary musical. It’s called Timmy the Great and it’s about a nine-year-old king. Naturally, I was a little hesitant and worried that my daughter might find it boring or not be able to relate to it, as there weren’t fairies or princesses in it, but I could not have been more wrong. Not only did she enjoy the musical, I  was just as impressed, if not more. (Read more after the jump)

Here’s the plot: When his father, the king, is murdered, Timmy, a nine-year-old prince, becomes king. He’s got a lot on his plate: the kingdom is in financial trouble; the kids in the kingdom stage a revolution to demand change (they want adult privileges) and three neighboring kings begin a war, in attempt to take over his kingdom. How does Timmy the Great deal with all that? A clever outside-the-box-thinking type of kid, Timmy finds ways to overcome his and the kingdom’s troubles.

The musical, played by a cast of both adults and children, was well-written, well-acted and well-sung. There were so many grand moments it’s hard to pick just one, but I especially loved the three kings, who were hysterical. The entire cast seemed to be having a lot of fun and was really invested in the show. It was nice to see their passion and each actor really out-acted the other. I was especially impressed with Cormac Cullinane, who portrayed Timmy. He is a huge talent and his emotions on stage seemed very realistic.

Timmy the Great is written by renowned poet and producer Sandra Hochman, who teamed up with composer Gary Kupper, who wrote the songs and co-wrote the book for Freckleface Strawberry with Producer Rose Caiola. In addition, Sandra enlisted some big names on Broadway (such as Julie Arenal, who choreographed the original production of Hair on Broadway!) to help create this musical, which was also screened at the first Tribeca Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation and artistic acclaim.

Timmy the Great runs 1 hour and 45 minutes and is appropriate for kids ages 7 and up. My 6.5 year old daughter had a smile throughout most of the performance, although she missed some of the references and was getting a little tired towards the end. Nevertheless, she adored the performance and especially loved seeing all the children performing.
