Cookie-Making Party at Momofuku Milk Bar with Christina Tosi and American Express

12/28/2012 by The Mama Maven

By Contributing Blogger Randi Goodman

Recently, my little man and I ventured into the city for a cookie party with Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar. Momofuku and American Express teamed up to throw a great party! We anxiously rode the elevator to the fifth floor full of giggles and excitement. When the doors opened we were greeted and given matching big and small aprons. Waiting with the other early birds was the hardest part but once we were escorted into the main room we realized it was worth the wait! The whole room was full of cookies, ingredients and decorating supplies. There was even a fun themed photographer where the kids were lined up with props to take pictures as snowmen and women, reindeer; everything festive and wintery. (Read More after the jump).

Christina told us about how she she used her American Express card to help get her business started and then her mother came to tell us stories about when Christina was little and had a strong sweet tooth. Everyone in the room could relate! After that we were all invited to help toss ingredients into the mixer as Christina showed us how to prepare a couple of different recipes. Soon we were on our way off to the huge industrial kitchen with our tiny little rolling pins.

Each child had their own work station prepared with wax paper, flour and premade dough. Everyone shared the cookie cutters. When all the shapes were cut out and the baking trays were filled and loaded into the giant oven, my little man’s jaw hit the floor. He immediately had to tell me all of the reasons why we should not go near it. Safety first!

After everyone got good and messy, we were all released back into the party room and the kids spread themselves out across the decorating tables passing back and forth things like sugar, nuts, icing, and peppermint candies.

It is hilarious watching tiny hands squeeze giant globs of icing out of very large icing bags. It was even more hilarious to see how many kids didn’t bother to finish decorating a cookie before it made it’s way into their now colorful little mouths.

The party was a hit. By the end of the evening all of the little hands were covered in sugar. Some were clutching freshly printed photos of themselves and their families. Those with any sense of restraint were clutching the box of cookies that they made and didn’t eat. We came home with frosting on our faces and none in a box.

The best moment of the event was when we were getting ready to leave Christina came over to say goodbye and my little guy just beamed with pride that a “real live famous pastry chef” was his new friend. She even invited us to join her this weekend as she would be  giving out all of the cookies that the kids baked to spread holiday cheer.

We headed out the door with a new cookbook by Christina, our awesome matching aprons, some cookie mix, a new cookie cutter, a few candy canes, and a fully belly! And today we came home to find that our brand new Breville Smart Oven had arrived, compliments from Amex and Momofuku! So now we are able to easily bake some delicious cookies in our own kitchen.

Thank you to American Express and Momofoku Milk Bar for hosting this event. I received a Breville Smart Oven for my attendance at the event, but no monetary compensation was received.
