NYC Vlogging Challenge: Haircuts and Sensory Kids

02/24/2016 by The Mama Maven

I am accepting the NYC Vloggers Challenge (it’s in week 2) from Divina of Dancinghotdogs, Jen of NextKidThing, and Lisa of AtypicalFamilia. Check out the details of the challenge here on NextKidThing.

Haircuts and the Sensory Child | The Mama Maven Blog

In my vlog, I am talking about haircuts and sensory kids. Check it out!

My oldest child B was very sensory and luckily has grown out of it. It took time, but we worked with him and found a hairstylist that accommodated him.

Haircut Tips for a Sensory Child | The Mama Maven Blog

Haircut Tips for a Sensory Child

1. Stay calm. Loud buzzing, the clacking of scissors, and an unfamiliar person may stress your sensory child out. It’s not misbehavior, understand that they don’t want to feel that way.
2. Find a stylist that can understand that your child is frightened. Some of the kids haircut places may be ideal, providing they are convenient to where you live. Your local hairstylist may be a fit also.
3. Distractions work! Put their favorite show or movie on a tablet or smart phone.
4. If you have to bribe with a treat after the haircut, do it.
5. Don’t force your child to get their hair cut – if they are really miserable, find a way to make it better for them.
6. The buzzing of a clipper may be very loud for a sensory child. Try using a scissor instead. It may take longer, but it may calm your sensor child.

For my little guy, we eventually had to turn to home haircuts, as he couldn’t relax in a hair salon or barber. We bought a Wahl Hair Clipper Kit and now cut his hair at home. He still isn’t a fan, but he will let us cut his hair.
