Are You Wearing the Correct Bra Size? Tips from an Intimacy Bra Fitter

06/12/2014 by The Mama Maven

One of my day jobs is outreach for a nursing bra company, so I know how a good nursing bra can fit– but when it comes to regular bras, I admit I’m a little lost.

Last week I attended Momtrends’ event at Intimacy on the Upper East Side and may have finally found bra heaven.
I’m blessed with the same well endowed chest as my late grandmother (the redhead), and it’s been difficult to find comfortable bras post nursing (and frankly all of my life).

But Intimacy was different.

Laura Camargo was my fitter and she actually never pulled out a measuring tape, to my surprise. She was able to tell my size (40F, which was surprising, because last summer at Nordstrom’s, I was told I was a 40G, after years of thinking I was a 42DD). Laura picked out a Prima Donna bra and asked me to try it.

I have tended to go for minimizers, but Laura explained they actually weren’t making me look better. She asked me to trust her and I did.

And to my immense surprise, it looked good. And felt good. But I wasn’t done yet. The bra she chose for me was great, but wasn’t going to work for dresses. So I asked to see another bra. She showed me the Prima Donna in blue tulip, which is heat molded lace. And it was glorious too. Here’s the stock picture (because once I put it on, I wouldn’t take it off).

I ended up getting both bras (one for free, and 20% off the other one). They felt AMAZING. Simply amazing. No back fat, I felt “held in”. I may never go back to the brands I had worn before, now that I know that I can feel (and look) so good.

How to find the Correct Bra Size (for Fuller Figure Ladies) from Laura Camargo, Intimacy Bra Fit Expert

1. The band is important – for fuller size ladies, you want most of the support to come from the band. 80 – 90% of a fit is going to be due to a good, supportive band – don’t buy a band that is too big.

2. The wires should go a little bit further back than we believe, because the breast tissue starts a lot further back than we think.

3. You want the bridge (that center part) to be right up against your chest. There shouldn’t be any spilling out when you bend over (this isn’t Legally Blonde, people).

4. Most women have one breast that’s a little bigger, make sure your bra fits the bigger breast well.

While you may not want to spend big bucks on a bra, there was such a difference in the way I looked.

There are several locations in different cities for Intimacy. Including 3 locations right in NYC (and one on Long Island).

Find an Intimacy location here.

Thank you to Momtrends for inviting me to this event.
