Review: Safety 1st’s Rumi Air Harnessed Booster Seat

11/01/2011 by The Mama Maven

What do you do when your child is big enough and ready for a booster seat, and you still want to keep them in a harnessed seat? Safety 1st Rumi Air Harnessed Booster  ($179) offers a 5 point harness and can be converted to a belt-positioning booster when your child (or me in this case) is ready. My son, who just hit 40 pounds at age 6 has been using it as a harnessed booster and likes it because it looks like a big kid booster seat — not a “baby” one as he says. He’s almost ready to change it into a seatbelt booster (as he finally gets a little more mature).

It features Air Protect® Side Impact Technology and combines this with energy management design (called FlexTech™) that offers additional protection.

Last spring at an event, I spoke to the team behind the Rumi and was very impressed with the way the car seat provides greater energy absorption and head containment in the most severe impacts. The easy-adjust 12-position headrest of the Rümi properly aligns the Air Protect system with the child’s head, where it’s most important. The seat was also comfortable and I liked that it was a lower seat than the huge convertible car seat we replaced this with. They told me the lower seat is better for energy absorption in the case of a crash.

We also liked the features like the no-rethread harness, adjustable headrest and yes, the cup and snack holders. Use as a harnessed booster with children from 22 – 65 pounds. Convert to a belt-positioning booster from 40-100 pounds. The seat was easy to install (there are color coded seat belt paths to help).
