Although our summer plans for a vacation and day camps have been canceled, things are starting to open around the vicinity of New York, but one thing is very clear: for the most part, we will remain homebound this summer and all we can do is make the most if it. Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a yard, you can still find plenty of fun, educational toys that will keep the kids busy and happy. I found two that provide enrichment and that are also affordable – a win-win!
These fun, BPA-free magnetic tiles come in two shapes: triangle and square (some sets come with circles). In the 14 piece set you get triangles and squares, along with a booklet with ideas. My seven year old opened the package and immediately started building his own shapes. Later he tried the ideas from the booklet and liked them as well. The starter kit is great because although there are only 14 pieces there are so many creative shapes you can make with them and they are also a great sensory toy and perfect for kids who fidget. My son had a blast creating his own shapes, as well as figuring out how to make shapes from the booklet based on the instructions. For ages 3 and up. Price is $14.57
We like to go for early evening walks in our neighborhood and we recently got into bird watching. We have binoculars so I was curious to see how this “beginners” telescope measures up. I found that I was able to see surprisingly well with it – the trick is to adjust the knob in the front to make it clear. It has 12x magnification power and although we have not yet tried it at night to look at the starts, we tried it on a recent walk to a nearby lake and loved that we were able to see the ducks fairly well. It’s very sturdy and light, so you can easily take it everywhere. For ages 6 and up. Price is $19.95
