The Disney version of Beauty and the Beast is hugely popular, not only as an animated film but as a live-action film as well as a musical. The New Victory Theater in New York, known for having shows with unique perspectives on classics and for hosting theater troupes from around the world, is hosting another troupe, this time from England. The New International Encounter (NIE) is currently performing their show, Beauty and the Beast, a re-telling of the story with their own clever twist. In this version, Isabella, the heroine, lives with her father and two mean sisters in a small house in the woods. When her father wonders into the beast’s garden and steals a rose the beast tells him he can go say goodbye to his family but must come back as his prisoner. Isabella takes the blame and goes to the castle instead of her father. When the beast sees her he tries to get her to fall in love with him; he gives her gifts and is disappointed his plan isn’t working. He lets her go back to her family and when she sees them she realizes that she loves him because if who he is on the inside.
I took my nine-year-old son to see the show and we both enjoyed it and laughed out loud along with the rest of the audience. The show’s dialogue is well-written, hysterical at times and touching at others. The message is crystal-clear: it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Martin Bonger as the beast was superb and the two sisters, portrayed by Samantha Sutherland and Elliot Davis, stole the show with their chemistry and stage presence. Sara Lessore as Isabella was a perfect modern version of “Beauty”. I loved that all performers were able to play a variety of instruments, as well as sing and act. The show is set in the jazz age with relevant costumes and some amazing music that I personally went nuts for. I wish more kids’ shows would have this type of music!
The performance runs one hour and 45 minutes, including one intermission. The show is recommended for kids ages six and up and I think it’s perfect for elementary-school-aged kids.
