The Other F Word: Season 2 Now on Amazon Video – Moms, This is The Series For You

As a mother who’s well into her forties, I really enjoyed watching The Other F Word . This smart and funny show, written and directed by Caytha Jentis, now streaming on Amazon Prime, just launched Season 2. It’s about a core group of four friends: Amy (Stephanie Little), her older sister Diane (LeeAnne Hutchison), Orly (Holly Cate), and Trish (Reiko Aylesworth). It’s a funny show that also has heart — these friends discover themselves and that child rearing is very different from starting over after the kids are grown. The Other F Word: Season 2 Now on Amazon Video – Moms, This is The Series For You The Other F Word: Season 2 Now on Amazon Prime

Amy, Orly, Diane, and Trish - The Other F Word

Amy, Orly, Diane, and Trish – The Other F Word

The Story:
While skydiving, Orly’s husband suddenly passes away. This inspires Amy’s husband (who was friends with the husband) to quit his job and join the Peace Corps in Cambodia for a year. Amy moves to NYC to stay with her sister, Diane – who is dating someone much younger. Amy, who was a stay at home mom for 20 something years, now has to get a job to support herself. She feels so betrayed that her husband took off for a year. Trish has one daughter at an Ivy League school and one daughter who’s 16. To help her daughter in college, she’s enrolled in college herself to mirror the classes her daughter is taking, so she can help her. She’s the very definition of a helicopter mom.

Check out the Season 2 trailer:

I found it totally relatable — and Amy was who I identified with most, as I’ve been working at home mostly since my oldest son was a toddler and I never went back to my teaching job. A few years ago, I spoke to someone at my old job and she told me that I wouldn’t be able to hack it now — everything has changed. While I didn’t intend to go back to teaching anyway, it stung. No one wants to be told that they are a dinosaur. In the first season, Amy goes to talk to Sherry, played by the fabulous Judy Gold, who flat out says to her what Amy wasn’t prepared to hear — that Amy couldn’t really expect to sit out for 20+ years and expect to get a job and a desk full of leads. So, what is Amy qualified to do now? While we get sort of an answer at the end of the second season, I can’t wait to see where she definitely lands. She is stronger than she thinks.

Widowed Orly (who I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off) seems to jump right back into single life — but her life isn’t what it seems either and it takes her a while to let her grief out. Her father has dementia (he’s in Arizona) and she doesn’t want to be his caretaker. That doesn’t make her a bad person, but she still feels guilty. She’s a complicated character and I can’t wait to see how her story turns out. At the end of Season 2, she gets a huge shock. I can’t wait to see what happens.

The show talks about perimenopause, the pressure of kids in college, and the reality of kids having no direction after college, that will be in my future. I was hooked by series and laughed my tuchus off. Each episode is about 6 to 10 minutes for the first season and 10- 18 minutes for the second season, so it was very easy for me to watch once the kids were asleep (or when I would lock myself in my room – no judgments here, right?).

You’ll recognize Steve Guttenberg as Trish’s professor and Spin City Alum Michael Boatman as Amy’s friend/crush. Also, you’ll recognize Ben Bailey (Cash Cab) Gilbert Gottfried (Episodes, Alladin) Nancy Giles (China Beach, CBS Correspondent) Henriette Mantel (Brady Bunch Movie) & Alysia Reiner (Better Days, Orange is the New Black).
