Thomas & Friends Birthday Party (Hack Your Own Cupcake Toppers)

09/08/2013 by The Mama Maven

By Nancy Johnson Horn, Editor

My youngest child adores Thomas & Friends, so when I was planning his 3rd birthday party recently, it was a no brainer to pick Thomas & Friends as a theme. Since I had won a Party City Gift Card at a Mets Game in the spring, that’s where I decided to shop. Of course I did it all the day before the party (bad planning on my part), so I had to be creative when I couldn’t find cupcake toppers at my local store.

However, I could do a hack. I noticed a pack of 8 Thomas & Friends plastic medals on long ribbons, so I bought them and took them home. I cut the ribbons off each one. I put the plastic medals in a ziploc bag and packed it for the party. The next day, in the classroom, I placed each one on a cupcake ( I bought nut free cupcakes from Whole Foods, since there was a child with a nut allergy in the class and I was following the school rules). It worked out perfectly, since there were 12 plastic medals in the package and I had bought 12 cupcakes for the class.

I also purchased Thomas & Friends plates, napkins and goody bag items.

I had a very happy toddler.

Now, you could technically do this for any character birthday. If you can’t find a cupcake topper or cake topper, you can take small toys (even brand new small matchbox cars) and place them on your cupcakes or cakes. When my oldest child was little, we spent beaucoup bucks on a fancy cake from Baskin Robbins. They had small vehicles on our “Construction Cake” and we supplied a small Bob The Builder to place on top (we had ordered it online). It looked fanastic, but I was little annoyed that I just didn’t buy cupcakes and stick a toy on top of each (would have been just as cute and so much cheaper!).

What do you do for your child’s birthday cake or cupcakes to make it special for them?

This post was not sponsored by Party City – we received a Party City gift card as a door prize at a Mets Game in April and used it to purchase these items.
