Review: Battleship zAPPed Edition and Spellshot zAPPed Edition

10/03/2012 by Julie T.

By Julie Terrone, Senior Toy Editor

2 great Hasbro apps  are now available to download for FREE and play is enhanced when the movable mini figures for each game are used. For Battleship zAPPed Movie Edition, there’s  a kit containing 3 mini Zapp ships and 3 strategy cards can be purchased . For Spellshot zAPPed Edition, the  kit contains 4 Zapp wizards and 4 spell cards. The use of these manipulative pawns makes play come alive! (Read More after the Jump).

Check out the following reviews for each game:

Battleship zAPPEd Movie Edition:

Mostly everyone has heard these words ” Hey, you just sunk my battleship!” You may even know how to play the board game Battleship and maybe you have even seen the movie. Well Hasbro has brought Battleship into the tech world by creating Battleship zAPPEd Edition. This is a kit which includes 3 Zapp mini battleships and 3 strategic battle cards to be used with the FREE Battleship zAPPEd Edition APP from the iTunes APP store. This kit is sold separately, but it makes the game come alive. Once the APP is downloaded, you actually use 1 of 3 mini battleships and strategy cards to play this game. (The game can be played without the mini-ships as well).

This game is a great way to use tactile skills by manipulating the chosen mini ship, following the mission and on-screen instructions. You can switch from actual sea-view mode using the binoculars or to radar mode where your alien enemies pop up on the radar screen revealing their location. This app and Battleship Movie Edition kit by Hasbro make defeating aliens so much fun. Man your ships and have epic battles, execute strategic maneuvers, air strikes and missile attacks.

What we really liked about the APP was that it gave great instructions on how to play the game and great on screen tips during each naval mission. Your objective is to defeat alien ships and try to earn up to 3 stars during each mission to unlock more missions, or get boosts and repair kits for your fleet as the game goes on. The player has the opportunity to retry to mission or continue on to the next one. After each completion of a mission, your rank improves too.

The graphics of the APP are of good quality. The mini plastic ships are well made and specifically made for the iPad screen so no scratches will be made as the ship touches the screen.

My boys ages 5 1/2 and 10 both enjoyed playing this game. Hasbro Recommends this game for ages 8+.

It is a 1 player game and the approximate retail price is $14.99 and is available at all major retail stores such as Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, and Kmart.

SpellShot zAPPed Edition:

My kids love this Spellshot zAPPED Edition and could not wait to open the kit so they could use the 4 Zapp wizards to make their game play more exciting. All the Elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) combine in this battle game that turns the iPad screen into an interactive dueling battleground. The mini Zapp wizard pawns are placed on the screen and players use strategy and skill to cast spells by a simple touch. The iPad recognizes individual wizards. Battle through magical worlds such as Island World or Jungle World.

Air Wizard Breezicus, Fire Wizard Noxius, Tree Wizard Landor and Water Wizard Stormica and each have strengths and weakness against each other, but cast the right spell and be first to collect all of the treasure wins. This is a 2 player game and should be played with the mini Zapp Wizard Pawns, but can be played without them but it is not as fun.

My kids like the idea of the game being a 2 player game, but it can be played alone. This game is recommended for children ages 8+ and is great for Teens, Boys Girls and Techies.

The approximate retail price is $14.99 and is available at all major retail stores such as Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, and Kmart.

I was sent a Battleship zAPPed Movie Edition Kit and a SpellShot zAPPed Edition kit for the purpose of this review.
