Review: The Good Dinosaur

11/27/2015 by The Mama Maven

The Good Dinosaur just opened and we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek. Is it for your kids?

“The Good Dinosaur” asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? The Good Dinosaur | The Mama Maven Blog

While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend, and learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of. The film is beautifully animated and entertaining to kids and adults.

What I always want to know when I read a movie review is whether or not my kids will be scared. The answer isn’t simple. Yes, we loved the movie, but there are several scary parts.

The Good Dinosaur Scene | The Mama Maven BlogWhile I am not going to post spoilers, there are some things to consider.

I took my 5 year old who is CRAZY about dinosaurs. There were several parts when he was scared. The short film, Sanjay’s Super Team, that plays before the movie has a monster and it frightened my child.

I was expecting The Good Dinosaur to have some scary parts, but it didn’t occur to me that there would be a short film I’d have to worry about.

The Good DinosaurThe lesson of trusting yourself is a good one and definitely inspiring to kids. Arlo is on his own (with a small human companion) for most of the movie and for little kids who never go anywhere alone, it is interesting to see how he handles things.

We recommend The Good Dinosaur for ages 7 and up.
