Looking for a fun and delicious activity to do with your kids in NYC on the weekends? Pizza Making Classes are starting next week at Rossopomodoro in the West Village of Manhattan. If that name sounds familiar, you are right — Chef and Owner Simone Falco was on Beat Bobby Flay (he actually beat him with his Ossobuco). We just got a sneak peek at the kids pizza making class and you’re going to love it!
The Pizza Making Work Space at Rossopomodoro:
Two of my kids were taught how to make pizza by Achille Confuorto, who’s one of the General Managers. He was patient and knowledgeable. The entire staff was wonderful and very attuned to our needs. Before coming to our class, I had informed them of my 12 year old son’s Type 1 diabetes and Chef Falco personally made sure he researched the carb count of the pizza dough for us. Achille, who showed my kids how to make the pizza, was also aware of my son’s needs. I really appreciated that personal touch from Chef Falco and Mr. Confuorto. The waiter also helped us figure out the carb count of the gelato so my son could also have that. While this was a minor detail for the staff to help with, it meant a lot to us (I usually have to guestimate the carb count of the foods we eat out so my son can dose himself with insulin).
Onto the pizza making!
Each kid gets homemade dough, Italian tomato sauce, and cheese, along with a variety of toppings.
My kids had the dough ready on floured boards and then they rolled them out – rolling pins were provided. They could make their dough in any shape they wanted (but my kids were happy with a traditional circle). They were able to add sauce, mozzarella, and basil. My oldest son asked for pepperoni since he loves that. This was a very delicious family-friendly activity!
I really liked that it was real, fresh ingredients – with homemade dough, delicious tomato sauce, and soft mozzarella. The mozzarella was really fresh — and not exactly like the shredded mozzarella that I buy. Kids may notice that it’s a little different, but my kids ended up loving it. And yes, my daughter was a little hesitant at first until she tried it and realized that this was really FRESH MOZZARELLA!!
My kids were proud of their handiwork — at home, I try to cook with my kids as much as possible because it really does promote eating what you make!
My younger son declined to make pizza and I asked for some mushrooms for him to snack on — and they made him a personal pizza with grilled mushrooms.
Skylar’s pretty picky so imagine my surprise when he ate it with relish.
Then he enjoyed the chocolate gelato. And by enjoying, he tried to lick the bowl. This is the same kid who refused to eat dinner the night before because he didn’t like the portobello mushroom burgers I made!
Simone Falco, an Italian born restaurateur who opened the first U.S. stand-alone Rossopomodoro restaurant in the West Village, and also ran Rossopomodoro’s U.S. operations at Eataly New York, Chicago, and San Paolo, recently experienced an evolution in the way he lived and ate. Simone became increasingly more interested in health and nutrition, forgoing gluten and dairy, and focusing on wild fish, pasture-raised eggs, 100% grass-fed beef, and an abundance of vegetables. As a result of the way he was eating at home, he felt that he wanted to shift the focus at his restaurant in the West Village.
