Great Find: Babo Botanicals – Organic Personal Care Products for Kids

04/19/2013 by The Mama Maven

By Nancy Johnson Horn, Editor

Everyday, I try to be a little greener, waste less, use organic products more. That includes caring about what touches our skin, the cleaning products we use, and the food that goes in our bodies. That includes products for my kids. Babo Botanicals, an organic kids personal care line, recently sent us samples for review and we just fell in love with them.

All of Babo Botanicals products are organic, sulfate free and 100% vegan. Founding mother Kate Solomon had 10 years experience in product development for beauty companies such as L’Oreal, Parfums Givenchy and Avon. After the birth of her first child, she couldn’t find baby “grooming” products that didn’t have chemicals and dealt with children’s particular hair and skin problems, so she developed her own line of botanical products.

Cool Fact: Babo’s packaging is made from all organic botanicals and anti-inflammatory ingredients that are produced on an all organic farm in upstate New York.

We checked out several products: The Clear Zinc Sunscreen Stick and Sunscreen, Rosemary Tea Tree Lice Repel Shampoo and Rosemary Tea Tree Lice Repel Conditioning Spray, and the Oatmeal Calendula Bubble Bath & Wash.

The Clear Zinc Sunscreen is non-greasy and has a SPF 30 with an active ingredient of zinc oxide. It contains 22.5% zinc oxide (most zinc sunscreens ranks at 3%). Dr. Gary Cole of the Skin Center says, “Overall the safest and most effective sun protection products are pure zinc and/or titanium based sunblocks. These 2 ingredients have been around a long time and boast great safety data. This non-nano zinc sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB, is stable and doesn’t break down in the sun, and doesn’t get absorbed through the skin.”

As the mom of a redheaded child, who is very fair herself, we take sunscreen very seriously. We look forward to using this summer (and I’m taking it to Cancun when I visit the Hard Rock Hotel Resort this week).

Did you ever have lice as a kid or have your kids had it yet? I remember having it as a kid and it sucked. Luckily, with 3 kids in school, we’ve avoided it.. so far.

Babo Botanicals Rosemary Tea Tree Lice Repel Shampoo ($18)

  • Clinically Proven 95% effective to repel head lice when used in combination with Lice Repel Conditioning Spray
  • Contains repellant oils of Rosemary, Tea Tree and Mint
  • Gentle botanical blend is non-irritating for daily use
  • Purifies, smoothes and softens hair and scalp
  • Certified Organic

Ingredients also include chamomile, Watercress, Kudzu and Calendula. While my children haven’t gotten lice yet, it’s good to know that the chance is much less (95%)!

Here are our thoughts about the Rosemary Repel Conditioning Spray.

The conditioning spray really did a wonderful job of detangling my 5 year old daughter’s hair. Her hair stayed fresh and untangled for DAYS! And it smelled incredible. We’re big fans.

Lastly, we checked out the Oatmeal Calendula Bubble Bath & Wash ($16.95). My youngest child (the pale redhead) has a benign skin condition called keratosis pilaris  or “KP” (little bumps on his arms and legs – I had this as a kid too). I’m very careful what we use on his skin and Babo Botanicals’ Oatmeal Calendula Bubble Bath & Wash was gentle for him. Plus, it also smelled incredible!

Highlights:

  • Gently scented bubbles for extra sensitive skin
  • Oatmilk is known to relieve eczema
  • Calendula moistuizes and soothes dry skin
  • Perfect for the entire family. Gentle for pregnant women.
  • Plant based formula gently cleanses

Thank you to Babo Botanicals for sending samples for review purposes.
