I love it when my kids play with the same toys I used to play with when I was a child. LEGO is one of those classic, timeless toys that kids of all ages instinctively know how to build with. My kids are big fans of LEGO’s and love to create all sorts of masterpieces so I was really excited to take them to the Art of the Brick exhibit at Discovery Times Square, where we saw some amazing displays of LEGO art. From famous paintings to original creations, this exhibit has it all, plus a few surprises. (Read more after the jump)
The Art of the Brick is an exhibit of over 100 works of art made solely by LEGO’s and created by one man: Nathan Sawaya. A former corporate lawyer who has found his calling as an artist, Sawaya spends weeks and sometimes months on each artwork. From classic masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, to thought-provoking original art, Sawaya has emerged as one of the most popular award-winning contemporary artists of our time.
I took my kids to see the exhibit and we were able to get up-close views of the works of art and see the details of the LEGO’s. The famous paintings were obvious crowd-pleasers and the 20-foot-long T-Rex dinosaur skeleton was incredibly impressive but I was most touched by the original artwork that placed the exhibit on a deeper realm and gave the public a chance to see another side of Sawaya. For example, Grasp, the artwork below that shows a man in red with grey arms grasping him evokes the notion of a man chasing after his dreams but being metaphorically held back and his struggle to get loose. To see this – and more works of art – be sure to stop by Times Square to check out this must-see exhibit!
