I love having school-aged kids that can just go to bed when I tell them without too much fuss (well, maybe a little). But my three-year-old still has a hard time getting himself settled down for the night’s sleep. I’ve been trying various types of calming music and this sweetest lullaby album: “Little Lullaby” by RORY may just be the ticket.

Rory is an award-winning children’s  recording artist and songwriter who also had her own show on TLC, called Rory’s Place. She grew up with a mother who was a big-band singer in 1940’s New York. Rory’s joy of music has inspired her to sing to children and Little Lullaby is her latest album, after albums such as Little Broadway”, which features songs from the stage and “Little Hollywood”, featuring songs from the movies, just to name a few.

Little Lullaby is a collection of soft-sounding lullabies coupled with Rory’s super-sweet voice and the result is an absolute treat to listen to. It features original songs, as well as covers. The album starts out with the popular “Sing”, which can be somewhat-fast-paced and uplifting. Rory takes it down a notch (or two) and turns it into a calming piece. Next is “Come Saturday Morning” which is an adorable little number with a nostalgic feel. It’s followed by the famous “Little Things” which is the perfect song to hear as you drift off to sleep, with the positive images it conjures.

Next up is “Shower the People” – another ultra-sweet song. “Somebody Come and Play” is also filled with positive imagery – perfect for young children for whom the word “play” is ubiquitous. It’s followed by one of the most popular songs out there: “Close to You”. I’m a big fan of The Carpenters’ version but Rory’s voice is perfect for this song. She keeps her pitch somewhat low at first and then raises it, at just the right moment. I love the catchy “Family”, which Rory co-wrote, because of the words in this song – it’s really nice to hear positive words about family and people in the world in general. The album concludes with “Tom’s Lullaby” which works well as a final song as it is meditative, so if your kid hasn’t fallen asleep by now, this song, encouraging him or her to “close eyes and count sheep” will certainly do the trick.
