Mizrahi is not only the narrator; he is also the director and costume designer. Choreography is by John Heginbotham. Music is by Ensemble Signal, conducted by Brad Lubman (Dec. 1 and 2) and Oliver Hagen (Dec. 7,8,9). This show is a real treat, not only because of the charming story, but also because this particular interpretation is especially endearing; the famous, catchy melodies by Prokofiev come to life and, of course, Mizrahi steals the show with his charm and wit.

In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned to write a light-hearted piece for children that would introduce the instruments and sounds of the orchestra. He was given a libretto, but he didn’t like it, so he came up with a new story. The music was completed in a week. Peter & the Wolf was the result, and it is a work still loved by children and adults. The story tells how Peter, against his grandfather’s will, opens the park gate, ventures into the big green meadow, and ultimately manages to liberate the City from the scary wolf. Peter captures the wolf with the help of a bird, his friend, and hands him over to the hunter, with a specific request: to take the wolf to the zoo. Each character in the story is represented by an instrument. The narrator reads the story between the musical sections.

I have attended the show for the past few years and it’s witty, clever and wonderfully set to Prokofiev’s irresistible melodies and catchy music. It’s recommended for kids ages 5 and up. The theater is relatively small and shaped like a semi-circle so you can see very well from anywhere.

In what has become an annual holiday tradition, Works & Process at the Guggenheim presents ten performances of Sergei Prokofiev’s charming children’s classic, Peter & the Wolf. Reviving the sold-out 2015 production, for the tenth year, renowned fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi will narrate the production. Brad Lubman will conduct Ensemble Signal. Mizrahi will narrate, direct, design the set and costumes, and his special cast will perform choreography by John Heginbotham, in which the familiar characters come to life in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Guggenheim. The story brings 30 minutes of suspense, including a happy ending, and allows the young and young-at-heart to hear and learn the various instruments in the orchestra. The performance is recommended for children ages 5.

Some stories are meant to be read out loud and Peter & the Wolf is one of them. Fashion designer & TV personality Isaac Mizrahi has been narrating the story in recent years at the Guggenheim Museum with finesse, humor and charisma. I have been going to see him for the past few years and each time he manages to captivate the audience with this timeless tale. With the help of top-notch musicians and actors, this is a memorable performance that’s sure to be a big hit this holiday season.

The Guggenheim Museum is holding its annual event of ten performances of this children’s classic which is a part of the Works & Process performing arts series. The music, written by Sergei Prokofiev, will be performed by Ensemble Signal, who TimeOutNY called a “new music dream team”, with conductor Grammy-award winner Eric Dudley. A cast will perform to John Heginbotham’s choreography. In the story, the wolf, who has swallowed the duck, is captured by Peter’s brilliant scheme with the help of his friend, the bird. All’s well that ends well when the hunters arrive to take the wolf to the zoo. The performance is 30 minutes long and is appropriate for kids ages 5 and up.
