Ever been to a Stew Leonard’s Grocery Store? Growing up, my aunt and uncle lived in Weston, Connecticut (a suburb of Westport) and they always shopped at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk. I remember the sense of wonder I had when they would take me to the store — the sights, the sounds, and the food were just amazing. In later years, I would make a point to stop by the Yonkers store, when I would come home from being in Westchester or points north. I loved bringing my kids there, as it was such a fun (and delicious smelling) store. My kids enjoyed the way the store was decorated and the friendly employees. Recently, I had the chance to check out their Farmingdale, Long Island, NY store. What did I think? Read on….

Stew Leonard’s started as a small dairy store founded in 1969 with seven employees. It’s grown to become a top grocery store, with annual sales of almost $400 million and almost 2,000 Team Members. In addition to the headquarters store in Norwalk, CT, Stew Leonard’s has stores in Danbury and Newington, CT, Yonkers and Farmingdale, Long Island, NY, and has plans for a new location in East Meadow, Long Island, NY. The store was easy to find, it’s right off Route 110 in Farmingdale. There was ample parking – note, this is across the parking lot from the Stew Leonard’s Wine and Spirits store.

It’s a large parking lot, so you may need to drive if you want to go to both places. Once you walk in to Stew Leonard’s, you can pick up coffee or ice cream or frozen yogurt. Or if you prefer, take home some ice cream sandwiches or pints right from their freezer case. If you spend $100 and over, you get a free ice cream cone or a coffee. Spend over $200 and you get two ice cream cones or two coffees. Nice perk, right?

You can also pick up their fresh donuts or popcorn. There were fresh muffins, a bakery section, salads, seafood department, meat department, cheese department, tons of fresh veggies and fruits, and well as a huge prepared foods section (with a Wings Bar, a Meatball Bar, Pizza Oven, Olive Bar and much more).

Stew Leonards shared their Executive Chef Michael Luboff’s Avocado Fries recipe with me and I made it for my family. It’s perfect for the big game!

Avocado Fries

Silky avocado replaces the tried-and-true potato in these crispy “fries” that are an unexpected addition to your game day menu. Freezing the slices of avocado keeps them firm for frying. Stew Leonard’s Executive Chef Michael Luboff suggests serving Avocado Fries with a side of Stew Leonard’s spicy chipotle dip. I used Stew Leonard’s Mango Salsa and it was so good. My kids devoured these!

Ingredients:

2 large ripe Haas avocados
3-4 cups vegetable oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour seasoned with salt and pepper
1 large egg, beaten
1 cup Panko bread crumbs

Directions:

Half, seed, scoop and slice the avocado lengthwise into half-inch strips. Put slices on a piece of parchment paper or on a plate and freeze for around 20 minutes.

Remove avocados from freezer and prep bowls with seasoned flour, eggs, and panko.

Dust with seasoned flour.

Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium high heat. I used a saute pan with high edges.

Working one at a time, dip avocado slices into the egg, then dredge in the Panko crumbs, pressing to coat.

Working in batches, add the avocado slices to the Dutch oven, 5 or 6 at a time, and fry until evenly golden brown and crispy, about 1-2 minutes on each side.

As we’ve mentioned before, we’re huge fans of Peapod Grocery Delivery by Stop and Shop. Since I do shop at Stop and Shop regularly, I love that I can buy products on Peapod.com that my family loves and uses. I really try to buy organic as much as possible, so their Nature’s Promise line is what I buy most of the time. I love the convenience of ordering from my laptop or iPhone (using their handy app) and having it delivered the next day. As I’ve mentioned before, with working and not having the car during the week, I depend on Peapod to keep my pantry and fridge stocked.

Peapod actually came to my rescue this past week. I’ve been away the past two weekends and things have been very busy. Next week I’m having sinus surgery so I need to make sure I prepare several meals that I can keep in the freezer for dinner for my family.

I ordered from Peapod on Monday afternoon and had my order by Tuesday night. Since I do order regularly, I really like that they have this new “Order Genius”, which fills in foods I purchase often so I don’t have to manually search for it every time I order.

I’ve noticed, for the best chance at picking your delivery time, order as early in the day as you can — or even two days in advance. This means I can pick a time when I can get $ off my order for picking a longer window (it’s greener too). I saved $3 by picking the 4:30 to 10pm time. While my order ended up coming at 10:20pm, Peapod actually called me and told me it would be coming at that time. I was pleased, because they cared enough to make sure I knew.

I recently had the chance to check ALDI Food Markets and was really impressed. I checked out the Rego Park, Queens, NY location. The store isn’t that large, but I later found out there’s a reason for that. The company has smaller stores to save energy. To go further on their green initiative, they encourage bringing your own bags to take their products home. You can buy bags for 11 cents each — which is a great incentive to bring your own.

And the prices were really great. So great that I will be shopping at ALDI on a regular basis. While they do carry some national brands like V8’s V-Fusion, they offered a lot of their own brands, which did look similar to brands that everyone knows.

I found foods that were similar to things I would normally buy; like fat free vanilla coffee creamer ($2.49), yogurt tubes ($1.99) and orange juice ($2.69).

I really liked ALDI’s Fit & Active line — items with lower fat, zero trans fats and higher protein. The turkey cost $2.49, the lite whipped topping was $0.89, the lite string cheese was $2.49, and the lite Meatball Sandwiches were $1.89 (and that includes 2!).

I would have liked to see some organic produce and some more organic products. I was able to score frozen organic strawberries for $2.39 (which was the best price I’ve seen for them), but that was about all that I saw. However, if you stick to buying the “Clean 15” at ALDI, you’ll get great prices.

There were also personal care items and some housewares items offered.

I ended up filling my stroller’s under basket with products to buy. I actually had to stop shopping, because I really would have bought a lot more. My purchases totaled $50 and I had a $25 gift certificate to cover 1/2 of it. In a regular supermarket, without coupons, my bill would have been at least $75, so I was pretty thrilled.

Here are some more ways ALDI is different:

The Carts: Put a quarter in the cart, shop and then return the cart to get your quarter back. This helps to keep prices low because they don’t spend time retrieving carts.

Checkout: Credit card processing fees are expensive. ALDI only accepts cash, debit and EBT cards, it helps keep their prices low.

Bags: ALDI doesn’t add the costs of bags to their prices. As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, you can bring your own bags or pay 11 cents per bag. Everyone I saw brought their own.

Pack Up: After paying, you move your cart to the bagging area. There you can pack your bags exactly how you’d like.

Thank you to ALDI for providing a $25 gift certificate for the purposes of this review. As always, all opinions are my own.
