Years ago, when my oldest was turning one, we went on a family vacation to Spain. I made lists of essentials and thought I did a great job packing but while we were visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid, my daughter was feeling really hot and acting lethargic. I did not pack any Children’s Advil or other cold medicine and let me tell you, when you don’t speak the native language it’s quite a challenge trying to communicate with the local pharmacist in a foreign country. These days when I go on vacation, whether abroad, or even just a road trip, I make sure to pack, at the very least, pain and fever medication, plus cold medicine. Getting sick on vacation is pretty common and being prepared means you’re ready for anything. Trust me, you don’t need to spend your vacation running around looking for pharmacies and trying to explain what’s wrong with your child to make sure she gets the right medication.

When packing for a trip I make a list a few weeks before the trip and keep adding to it as I get closer to the trip. Aside from the usual essentials, such as clothes and toiletries, I always pack extra bandaids, Neosporin and a thermometer. Children’s Advil®, Children’s Robitussin® and Children’s Dimetapp® are also must-haves. I’ve dealt with tooth aches, coughs, tummy aches and colds on our family vacations and packing these small bottles takes merely seconds (I just throw them in a gallon-size zip-lock). Not having the medications when I need them will require me to spend time looking for them at stores – which means less time enjoying my vacation!
