The toddler years are a crucial time for kids to develop interpersonal skills and while some kids are naturally more at ease with friendships, others need a little guidance. The award-winning, best-selling series, Elephant and Piggy, by Mo Willems (Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!) is about two friends and their interactions with one another. It has been developed into a play called Elephant & Piggy’s We Are in a Play, currently performing at The New Victory Theater.
The show, written by Mo Willems, is based on six of the Elephant & Piggy books and features an Elephant – a boy – and his best friend, Piggy – a girl. Together they discover what friendship is all about; they have ups and downs and learn that friendship is more important than anything else.
I recently saw the show at the New Vic with my seven-year-old who owns several of the books and is a big fan of the series. It was fun to watch a beloved series come to life! The elephant and Piggy characters, played by Evan Casey and Lauren Williams respectively, are absolutely endearing. With the help of the Squirelles (Jamie Eacker, Jennie Lutz and Justine “Icy” Moral) they bring the characters to life through cabaret-style songs and witty jokes that even the parents will chuckle at.
The show, which is directed by Jerry Whiddon, is 60 minutes long with no intermission and features a live band. It’s appropriate for kids ages 4-7.
The New Victory Theater is very family-friendly. There’s booster seats, free lockers, stroller parking and occasionally fun show-related hands-on activities before and after the show and during intermission.
