Learning Chinese is no easy feat; there is no Chinese alphabet – one must memorize the characters. This requires a lot of diligent, hard work and hours of practice. It is no surprise that the Golden Dragon Acrobats from China are so incredibly skilled at performing impressive feats at Cirque Ziva, a show currently playing at the New Victory Theater. I saw a performance last weekend and was blown away by the flawless, breathtaking acts, many of which are part of ancient Chinese artistry.
The show starts out very powerful, with a mystical ambiance, dramatic music and traditional costumes. Once the acts begin you see a variety of incredible and unique performances: diving through hoops, a tower of chairs, juggling balls, hats, even a table! The list goes on. It’s really hard to pick a favorite, each act is as unique and impressive at the previous. The music and gorgeous costumes make the show well-rounded and an absolute treat to watch.
Although there are 24 performers, throughout the show I kept seeing the same faces over and over – everyone performs in multiple acts. These are not simply talented acrobats. Husband and wife team – producer and artistic director Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang – scout the top acrobatic competitions to select elite performers to join the team. It is the best of the best at a one-of-a-kind performance that is a result of many hours of practice.
The show is two hours long (including one intermission) and is recommended for kids ages 5 and up, but it’s not just for kids. If you have out-of-town guests during the holidays be sure to take them to see the show – they will thank you for it!
