This week from July 4th through July 7th pirates are taking over Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, NY. It’s the annual Pirates of the Hudson event and your family is invited. There will be professional performers roaming the grounds to interact with you and your kids, beware the occasional pirate skirmish! The pirates will teach you how to be sea worthy and perform raucous shanties courtesy of The Brigands.
You may have your picture taken with a mermaid princess or a chatty parrot named Peterwick, try to sink ships in a game of Davey Jones’ revenge, and kids can explore a shipwreck or take part in the pieces of eight treasure hunt. Activities are continuous throughout the day so you don’t have to worry About missing anything. There will also be glitter tattoos from a professional artist and kids can buy treasures from the thieves market.
There will be themed food for purchase as well as draft brews from the Captain Lawrence Brewing Company for us older pirates. There will also be a real working blacksmith making pirate items from the era which most kids find fascinating! I have attended events produced by the Historic Hudson Valley for years and they never fail to impress and remain historically accurate and educational.
Entry is timed hourly from 1pm to 5 pm, leaving lots of time to get to a BBQ and some fireworks on the fourth or for those morning soccer lessons on the weekend. Adults are $16 and children under 18 are $12. Historic Hudson Valley members save $5 per ticket. All proceeds go to keeping American history alive at Philipsburg Manor and other estates in the area.
The author was given media tickets to this event, but as always all opinions are our own.
