If you are a fan of the classic Peter and the Wolf, you'll love the modern retelling — set in Hollywood, no less! Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood is a new musical storybook app by Giants are Small, narrated by the legendary Alice Cooper, and it made my kids just fall in love with the story and the music.
Prokofiev's 1936 children’s classic is reinvented as an interactive musical adventure and can be viewed on an iPad or iPhone. All the art is done by hand and lets children travel through a sculpted, painted, animated wonderland as they listen to beautiful classical music, and try to save Hollywood from a wolf on the loose. We were lucky enough to test out the deluxe version of the app, which also features 8 fun games for kids to play, along with exclusive behind-the-scenes videos and extras.
One thing we haven't done, is introduce our kids to classical music, so I was thrilled to use this modern retelling of Peter and the Wolf to do that. I actually will be introducing them to more, so this was a terrific gateway.
In this version, newly orphaned Peter flies from Russia to LA, to stay with his aging hippie grandfather who works for a Hollywood movie star. He finds it hard to make friends, so he becomes friends with the animals that live on the estate – a bird and a duck. Peter finds the chance to become a hero when a wolf escapes from the zoo. Peter is unafraid and figures out an clever way to trap the wolf.
My kids were enthralled by the graphics, the story, and the music. I appreciated the updated version and the funky cool grandfather. I was laughing when Peter talked about the Paparazzi. The art is really done well and really helped to bring the story to life.
My kids thought the cat and duck part was hysterical. Note: Some kids may be a little scared by the wolf, but that's definitely an appropriate reaction. I would be upset if the wolf didn't frighten them a little.
Check out what my two older kids (ages 8 and almost 11 thought):
The story is 50 minutes, so this is perfect for the kid that can concentrate or on plane rides or car rides. I found that my kids had to watch the whole thing and then they wanted to play the games as they came up and keep playing them. They were super engaged and really got into it. So, don't start this 5 minutes before bedtime and expect them to stop the app (yeah, that happened).
This features the music of Prokofiev, Wagner, Mahler, and more! The National Youth Orchestra of Germany plays the soundtrack to Peter & The Wolf in Hollywood. You can also get this as a CD.
