What would happen if the top of a Burrawang tree fell down to the ground? Most people will just sweep the grassy top away. If you’re Ted Prior you’d turn it into Grug and write a best-selling book. And now the Windmill Theater of Adelaide, Australia has created a show based on the book and brought it to New York, as part of a multi-city North American tour. You can see Grug at the New Victory Theater if you’re in NYC. (Read more after the jump)
Grug, as you can see from the pictures, is an adorable little creature that looks like a striped haystack with big, expressive eyes and an even bigger nose. He loves opening parcels he gets in the mail, planting in his garden and dancing. And everything he does – he does with creativity and endearing curiosity.
I recently attended a performance with my children and most of all, I loved watching their faces as they looked on with amazement, smiled at times and even giggled. The show was created specifically for kids ages 2-5 but my six-year-old daughter adored it and was able to connect to the character immediately! The show had some audience participation which included a really cute Grug dance.
The theater and lobby could not be more kid-friendly. Before you walk into the theater there is a large room where you can purchase snacks (or eat your own). In the middle of the floor there is a giant mat which is a coloring area complete with coloring papers of Grug and crayons and is supervised by friendly staff. Once the doors open and you can walk in you can pick any seat you like as there are no assigned seats, but since it’s a very small theater you can watch the show perfectly well from anywhere in the theater. The show is about 45 minutes long and includes, at the end of the show. a chance for the audience to come up on stage to meet Grug and see his house.
