We’re gearing up for another cold winter and we plan on staying indoors for the most part and simply enjoying each other’s company. I started by getting my supplies together. I always prefer to make sure I’m prepared.

What you’ll need:

Silicone mold — you can either use an egg bites mold or a hot chocolate bomb mold.

Good Melting chocolate wafer discs or melts or chocolate chips

Crushed Peppermint candy

Wilton Cookie Icing – You can do white or red. I found the red to be very messy, so I prefer using the white.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

I melted my white chocolate chips in my microwave, I like to melt it for 15-20 seconds at a time until it’s properly melted.

Then I took a spoon, dipped it in the chocolate and used the back of the spoon to cover each area in my silicone mold with chocolate.

I popped my mold in the freezer for 45 minutes and then added a little more chocolate to the mold to make sure it was covered.

Then I pulled the mold out of my freezer and popped my chocolate bomb halves out of the mold, using a butter knife to loosen them – honestly, this was a hard part. I’ll totally admit that my hot chocolate bombs looked a little like capsules. I may try them a different way next time!

I placed my peppermint hot chocolate mix and some star marshmallows in each of my hot chocolate bomb cups and then added another of the hot chocolate bomb cups and sealed it with some melted chocolate.

Then I drizzled white icing on the hot chocolate bombs and sprinkled crushed candy cane bits over them. They came out so cute!

Serve by putting it in a mug and pouring over hot water or hot milk and then watch to see the fun begin.

The classic Dickens tale A Christmas Carol has been transformed into a thrilling new music theatre piece—Scrooge & Gilbert & Sullivan—featuring a new book and lyrics by Nathan Hull. A holiday tradition began last year, this limited-run production will include musical highlights from 11 works by Gilbert & Sullivan, including the beloved Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, and H.M.S. Pinafore. Performed for the first time by Amore last December, Scrooge & Gilbert & Sullivan was an instant hit with audiences of all ages. The musical theatre production, directed by Mr. Hull and conducted by Elizabeth Hastings, features costumes by Cynthia Psoras. The cast includes, as Scrooge, baritones Ray Calderon & Martin Everall; in the role of Jacob Marley, baritone Jay Stephenson; as the Ghost of Christmas Present, soprano Alexis Cregger; and, as Tiny Tim, boy soprano Leo Kogan. Scrooge & Gilbert & Sullivan has been produced by many groups around the country.

A dazzling extravaganza of music, dance, and spectacle within the awesome space and acoustics of the world’s largest cathedral, the event is a contemporary take on ancient solstice rituals, when people felt a calling to come together on the longest night of the year to welcome the return of the sun and the birth of the new year. The Winter Solstice Celebration has evolved over the years to inhabit the entirety of the titanic space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The resounding acoustics have inspired the music of the event, and the vast dimensions of the Cathedral have given birth to unique theatrical elements. A 28-foot spiral “Solstice Tree,” adorned with a multitude of bells, gongs, and chimes symbolizing the diversity of the life family, becomes a part of the music; a huge Earth-globe travels through the Nave and rises over the center-stage; and a giant sun-gong ascends, with its player, to the 100-foot vault of the Cathedral at the symbolic moment of the return of the sun. “Of all the places I’ve played in the world,” Paul Winter says, “only two could host an event on this scale: the Cathedral and the Grand Canyon.”

Ragtag Theatre Company is back with their sold-out hit and this year’s Off Broadway Alliance winner for Best Family Show, Cinderella! Follow a troupe of poor “Italian” actors as they present the well-known fairy tale, Cinderella, in a brand-new way—with daffy llamas, roller skating fairy godmothers, selfie taking step sisters, and Carol Channing. This adaptation is performed in the Italian street theater style known as Commedia dell’Arte with larger-than-life characters, colorful song and dance numbers, tons of pop culture references and a great message on self-worth for kids.

Tsukihoshi began as a shoe store in Japan in 1873, where the shoemakers created shoes in-store. Now, 144 years later, the company continues to make shoes with the same motto: making fun, comfortable shoes that give children’s toes the freedom to move.

I received snow boots for my boys and had them try them on to see just how comfortable it is to run around in them. I was personally wondering what it feels like to have all that extra room in the front for your toes. We sampled the Frost shoe and both my sons thought the shoes were very comfortable. It’s not snowing yet in our area so I can’t tell how easy it will be to run around in a foot of snow but they were happy running around in leaves playing ball.

In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned to write a light-hearted piece for children that would introduce the instruments and sounds of the orchestra. He was given a libretto, but he didn’t like it, so he came up with a new story. The music was completed in a week. Peter & the Wolf was the result, and it is a work still loved by children and adults. The story tells how Peter, against his grandfather’s will, opens the park gate, ventures into the big green meadow, and ultimately manages to liberate the City from the scary wolf. Peter captures the wolf with the help of a bird, his friend, and hands him over to the hunter, with a specific request: to take the wolf to the zoo. Each character in the story is represented by an instrument. The narrator reads the story between the musical sections.

I have attended the show for the past few years and it’s witty, clever and wonderfully set to Prokofiev’s irresistible melodies and catchy music. It’s recommended for kids ages 5 and up. The theater is relatively small and shaped like a semi-circle so you can see very well from anywhere.

Elmo’s World Hide & Seek – $19.99, Ages 6 months-4 years

This super-adorable and inventive game requires two players or more. One player hides Elmo somewhere around the house, using cards that have photos of places to place Elmo around the house. The other player uses the enclosed cards to find him. There are 24 location cards with ideas for where to hide, such as the couch, a backpack, even a fruit bowl. Elmo is pretty small so he can hide easily. Every 10 seconds Elmo calls the player(s) to help them figure out where he is so you can just follow the sound of his voice to find him. Once Elmo is found he calls out “Yay! You found Elmo!” You can also give your child several cards to choose from as clues. This game can also be used with a baby as young as size months – simply place Elmo under a blanket or stuffed animal and allow the baby to try and find him based on the sounds Elmo makes.

This is a really great starter game for toddlers who love a good brain challenge and logical thinking games. In the game, which is for a single player, you have a house with 7 dwarves, Snow White and the Evil Queen figurines and a book of 48 challenges (plus solutions), from easy to hard. You place all the figurines inside the house based on pictures in the challenge book (there are special grooves that they can fit in). Once you place them you have to find the missing spot – and that’s where you put Snow White. Figuring out where to put her gets harder with each challenge and you have to use deduction and logic. In the story, a woman named Noel returns to her childhood home in Harlem with the decision to sell the house after her mother’s recent death. While waiting for the agent to bring back the paperwork she reflects back on her memories. In a type of flashback she views scenes from her past while still on stage as she’s watching scenes unfold before her eyes. Her older sister, also named Noel, died at age 9 before she was born and right before Christmas. Consequently her mother did not let her celebrate Christmas as a child. Young Noel was very unhappy with having a strict mother and so one day when her grandmother comes for a surprise visit she is full of hope again. But the grandmother’s visit opens up a pandora’s box and the family has to face their demons this was a moving scene-stealing performance). Eventually, though, Noel’s mother learns to let go and the family turns a new page. After remembering this turning point in her life, grownup Noel decides to tear up the paperwork and not to sell the house.

The show definitely had bittersweet tones. There are scenes of sadness along with comic scenes and uplifting scenes. Throughout the show the music plays a big role in creating the atmosphere. Whether it’s an emotional scene where grownup Noel is singing alongside her father from the past, or in a hysterical crowd-pleasing choir performance with the charismatic preacher, the show provides a healthy mix of emotions.

The songs are an eclectic mix of jazz, gospel and pop with some powerful ballads. Most of the songs are original, with a few Christmas favorites peppered in. The book, music and lyrics are written by Lelund Durond Thompson and Jason Michael Webb. Webb, also responsible for orchestrations, was also the music director in The Color Purple on Broadway. 

The performance is 90 minutes long with no intermission. I recommend it for kids age 10 and up because of the content.

As we prepare for holiday parties, we can also take the time to clean out our closets for the new year and give a little extra back to the local community at the same time. Goodwill provides ways to fulfill all of these goals. Not only can you shop for your holiday outfits, but you can also make a difference in the lives of people in your community by donating to Goodwill.

Goodwill sells donated goods through more than 3,200 stores across the United States and Canada, and channels more than 85 percent of sales revenue to provide those services to people who are unemployed or underemployed.

Since the holidays can be an increased stress for those that find themselves without work, we can do a simple good deed by giving a little extra to Goodwill or by doing some of our shopping there.

You would be amazed at what you might find. They have such a variety of gently used items and even some new items. Take a minute to reflect on the great blessings life has offered you and take this opportunity to give a little extra back to your community.

Since I chose a photo of scenic view in Val d’Orcia in Tuscany I selected landscape canvas. I uploaded my picture and was given a number of options for the best sizes. I chose the 20″ x 30″ which is a very large size but at $43 it’s very affordable! Next I selected an edge design (white, black, mirrored, stretched or folded – the website explains how the last three will look). There are also options to make the picture black & white or in color and to pick a thicker frame, for an additional fee. That’s all there is to it!

It’s hard to get kids away from their devices these days, but it’s important to allow kids to take a little break to engage in other types of activities, such as sports or enrichment. I came across a cute little book that’s compact and can be carried everywhere, but is also filled with tons of word puzzles (365 to be exact) that are not too time-consuming.

I really liked the variety of the exercises and I thought they seemed relatively simple, but pretty challenging for school-aged kids. I do recommend sitting with your kids to help them understand the instructions at first. We like this book so much, we now keep it permanently in the car!

My middle child started kindergarten this year and with it came a love of reading. He’s showing great interest in books and I want to encourage him to read as much as he wants. One fun way to get get a child to read is with a book that’s about him or her. LostMy.Name is a company that creates unique personalized books that are individually tailored to each child. I received one such book for review for my son.

Here’s what we thought:

The books are called “The Boy Who Lost His Name” and “The Girl Who Lost Her Name” and tell the story of a child who lost his or her name and goes looking for it. On the way the child meets various creatures who hand him a letter and together the child puts together his or her name again. This is a unique concept because since each child has a different name, the books are very different in terms of content. So someone with a very long name would meet more characters and get more letters from them. My son, Eric, meets four characters and gets from them four letters – E,R,I and C. The rhymes in the book, by David Cadji-Newby are adorable and the concept is unique but the best part is the incredible artwork by Pedro Serapicos that is just so brilliantly clever and stunning. In fact, I’d love to have some of the artwork hung up in the kids’ room.

I received a sample for review and handed it to my son. He started reading, not knowing that it has his name in it. As he began seeing the letters of his name he started realizing that the book was actually spelling his name and it was really cute to watch him read it out loud. The books are appropriate for kids ages 2-7 but my daughter who is turning eight really loved the book as well.

Some stories are meant to be read out loud and Peter & the Wolf is one of them. Fashion designer & TV personality Isaac Mizrahi has been narrating the story in recent years at the Guggenheim Museum with finesse, humor and charisma. I have been going to see him for the past few years and each time he manages to captivate the audience with this timeless tale. With the help of top-notch musicians and actors, this is a memorable performance that’s sure to be a big hit this holiday season.

The Guggenheim Museum is holding its annual event of ten performances of this children’s classic which is a part of the Works & Process performing arts series. The music, written by Sergei Prokofiev, will be performed by Ensemble Signal, who TimeOutNY called a “new music dream team”, with conductor Grammy-award winner Eric Dudley. A cast will perform to John Heginbotham’s choreography. In the story, the wolf, who has swallowed the duck, is captured by Peter’s brilliant scheme with the help of his friend, the bird. All’s well that ends well when the hunters arrive to take the wolf to the zoo. The performance is 30 minutes long and is appropriate for kids ages 5 and up.

Hard to believe Summer is more than halfway over. I’m getting ready to do some back-to-school shopping for my kids and I’m starting to think about clothes for the holidays. I recently attended an event which showcased clothing and gift ideas from Lands’ End. Most items will be available as we get closer to the holiday season but in the meantime, here’s a sneak peek of what we’ll see in stores soon:

December is the only time you can not only get away with wearing Christmas plaid, but also shine in it. Even though it’s a busy pattern it can bring a pop of color to an outfit if the colors are more-or-less from the same group of colors.

These red and navy stripes work for the entire family. I’m a big fan of navy year-round, but for the holiday season it’s especially elegant and since it can go with almost anything you can decide how to build your look with it. In this particular collection it has a more casual look, mostly because of the bright red horizontal stripes.

Another color I love for the fall and winter season is gray. Here it is in tweed and wool material for a more dressy look – perfect for holiday parties.

Navy and gray are classic winter colors but the ultimate color for the holidays is, of course, red. In the picture below you can see how red is incorporated in the outfits with holiday sweaters for that Christmas-y look for a casual yet elegant look.

Who says you can’t wear bright colors in the winter? In the display below you can see a pop of yellow, blue, bright red and even a little green along with the navy and gray. It’s okay to mix dark and light shades, especially when the brights are in the form of a fun outdoor winter jacket.

The play of dark and light colors is displayed in the below picture as well. A pea coat gets a feminine look with a bright, bold color. For men and boys it’s safer to stick to dark colors when it comes to pea coats.

Lands’ End has some elegant and timeless gift ideas. Throws, slippers, tote bags and scarves can be monogrammed for a personalized touch.
