Most magicians these days have their standard bag of tricks, literally; we’re used to seeing the same types of illusions and sleight of hand type of magic acts over and over. Vitaly Beckman is a different breed of magicians. His magic acts are like nothing you have ever seen before. I recently saw Vitaly: An Evening of Wonders and was completely dumbfounded by not only the uniqueness of the tricks but also by how impossible it was for me to figure them out. I couldn’t even try. Don’t Miss: Vitaly – An Evening of Wonders (+ Discount and Giveaway)
Born in Russia, raised in Israel and now living in Vancouver, Vitaly doesn’t have the glitz and glamour of other magicians who wear a fancy cape and act very dramatic. He simply plays himself without much fanfare. The staging is fairly minimal with beautiful artwork of tree branches and paintings. Vitaly is dressed very casually and his statement is very clear: the focus is solely on the magic acts. Indeed, when you are presented with such stupendous acts there’s no need for anything extravagant.
The magic tricks are definitely not your run-of-the-mill tricks. We’ve got paintings that come off the page, photographs that move before your eyes and people’s photos on their driver’s licenses that are either completely erased or switched into another photograph altogether. How does he do them? No clue! I did notice some slight of hand on some card tricks but getting artwork to literally come off the page is beyond any type of explanation. It was simply astounding to watch and I think the entire audience agreed with me that these are magic tricks in their own category of amazing. Renowned magicians Penn & Teller also agree; they were stumped by Vitaly’s illusions on their TV show “Fool Us”.
The show is 90 minutes long and is recommended for kids ages 8 and up although I think a well-behaved six-year-old will enjoy the magic as well. Toddlers might not have the same amount of patience.
Vitaly: An Evening if Wonders is playing until the end of September at Westside Theater, 407 West 43rd Street, NYC.
