A Christmas Carol, the classic tale by Charles Dickens, is a timeless story that resonates with each one of us, whether we celebrate Christmas or not. My kids are a little young for the book but Queens Theatre is holding performances of the story that are kid-appropriate, complete with impressive set, costumes and songs.
The story is well-known and the show is essentially built on the main ideas of the original story of Ebenezer Scrooge, but the adaptation (by Emily Trask and Lenny Banovez of Titan Theatre Company) has its own voice, with unique versions of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.
The production is like a top-notch off-Broadway show – imaginative scenic design and Victorian costumes, as well as wonderful music and even better singing. Everything is very professional. The cast is fairly large – 12 adults and 6 children, most of which play multiple parts. The acting is very good and consistent throughout the show with every single one of the actors.
I took my kids, ages 5 and almost 8 and although I had to explain some of the details of the story and what was going on, they both understood the main idea and really enjoyed the show. The parts with the ghosts were a little scary for them, as expected, but it did not prevent them from asking to see the show again. It was a thoroughly entertaining experience for both mom and kids and with a very uplifting ending that alone is worth checking out.
