At the end of this month many of us will gather together to celebrate Hanukkah or Christmas. A good number of us will take this opportunity to enjoy great food, catch up with relatives and, inevitably, bicker, argue and get annoyed with ourfamily.
One family that constantly bickers is the fictional Silverstein family from the classic children’s book “The Flying Latke” by Arthur Yorinks. In the story, family arguing escalates into a hilarious food fight which results in an innocent little latke that gets thrown out the window. The latke begins flying all over the TriState area which gets the government to believe there is a UFO-sighting. Eventually the FBI gets involves which causes more tension in the family. All’s well that wends well: the latke returns to the family table, unharmed.
I recently saw a very funny production of “The Flying Latke” at the Flea Theater in Tribeca with my almost-five-year old daughter. We both thoroughly enjoyed the show, especially the slapstick elements of it and even though my daughter didn’t always understand what was going on, when the show ended she immediately wanted to see it again. The intimate theater setting had our seats close to the stage and at the end of the show, when the entire audience clapped and sang along to the song “To Make Potato Latkes” (to the tune of “I Have a Little Dreidel”). we felt like we were already part of the family.
The Flying Latke is playing at the Flea Theater on December 10th, 11th and 17th at 11:00am. (All other shows have already been sold out).

She grew up in both California and Israel, which explains her love for California cuisine (fresh, local ingredients), as well as Mediterranean food (flavorful, heart-healthy ingredients). Maytal is a stay-at-home mom to two kids (ages 4 & 2) and works hard to ensure they eat healthy, unprocessed food, while trying to make it as delicious as possible. Married to a vegetarian and being a pescetarian herself, this can be quite a challenge. On an ordinary night at her dinner table, you can hear things like “More cauliflower, please!”, “How come I didn’t get a lot of tomato?” and “Fish oil! Yaaaay!”.
