Being a nature lover who lives in NYC, I’ll use any excuse to go to Central Park. Now that the cold weather is here I can’t take my kids out for too long. Luckily the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater holds terrific shows for kids and is the perfect place to escape from the cold while you’re in Central Park! (Read more after the jump)
I recently attended their latest show: The Three Bears Holiday Bash. This is a variety show that included other holidays and got everyone into the holiday spirit, no matter what holiday they celebrate. The show featured adorable marionettes and included holiday favorites such as “The night before Christmas”, “Twelve days of Christmas” and a piece from the Nutcracker Suite. The bears spoke about Hanukkah and a cute little video explained about the holiday. When the dreidel song came on many kids started singing along. The bears also spoke about Kwanzaa and explained what the holiday is about, while African music was playing in the background. There was also a special visit by a marionette Santa Clause , which was a big hit with the all the kids!
The numerous colorful marionettes, festive songs and warm and welcoming atmosphere are what made the show. A plot is irrelevant here; this is about celebrating the spirit of the holidays through all of our favorite holiday songs.
The theater itself is pretty small and the seats are unmarked – it’s on a first-come-first-served basis, so I loved that all of the kids were encouraged to sit in the front to get a better view. Word of advice: When I attended the show the theater was packed, so get there early to get a good seat upfront.
