Review: Udi’s Gluten Free Bread #GlutenFree #GF

By Contributor Carrie Morrison, our Gluten Free Reviewer

Bread is a tough one to replace in the gluten-free diet, or so I originally though. I pack lunch for my son Logan every day and sandwiches are really all my little guy seems to enjoy. While by NO means cheap, there are several really good gluten-free bread options and since my son Logan simply cannot live without sandwiches, we have tried SEVERAL varieties of breads. (Read More after the jump).Udi’s sent us a few loaf breads to try and each had a unique texture and taste. We kept each bread in the freezer to help keep them fresh and tried both toasting and defrosting to see which made for the best sandwich. Top on L-man’s list was the White Sandwich Bread.

The crust was chewy when thawed and crispy when toasted. He liked the bread either way and even gave high marks when I packed a sandwich on frozen bread and allowed it to thaw in his lunch box. All 6 of us (in my family) gave thumbs-up on this bread – the loaves are small and to my dismay, were gone after a single lunch packing.

Udi’s Whole Grain Bread was equally enjoyed. I thought this bread tasted most like “real bread”. This bread also did well toasted and thawed. The bread had a little sweeter taste to me; the rest of the family was too busy devouring their sandwiches to give me a description. All thumbs way up on this bread, too!

The differences of opinions came with the Omega Flax & Fiber and the Millet – Chia Breads.

I am a grainy-bread kind of girl, so I really enjoyed both breads. I liked both of them and the bits of crunchy bits in both varieties. The kids weren’t as big a fan. I have never been able to get them to eat any whole grain breads that had any obvious grains in them. I had a feeling this would carry over into this GF variety and only 3.5 out of 6 of us liked it. Logan ate it because it was in his lunch box, but I heard all about it when he got home. He finished his beloved sandwich, but asked for “less crunchy” bread next time.

The Cinnamon Raisin bread we tested was DELICIOUS… to those of us who don’t hate raisins with a PASSION (see our review of the oatmeal raisin cookies for a recap). I loved the way the house smelled when the bread was toasting. There was no skimping on the cinnamon in this bread and the raisins were plump and yummy. The crust was similar to the White Sandwich Bread and delicious toasted or not. I was almost glad I was the only one who really LOVED this bread – more for me to enjoy. 2 out of 6 gave thumbs up on this bread, but only because of the raisins.

In an effort to reduce the risk of cross-contamination for Logan, we have made the decision to only use gluten free breads at home. I am happy to report that we are HUGE fans of Udi’s breads. It is worth noting that all their breads are soy and dairy free and available in stores, Udi’s Breads on or online at
